Plastic Injection Molding

What is Plastic Injection Molding? 9 Steps, Principles, and Process Explained in One Go!

What Does Plastic Injection Molding Mean?

Plastic injection molding is a manufacturing process used to create a wide range of plastic products that we encounter in daily life. Items like bottles, pens, cosmetics cases, and many more are produced using this technique. This process involves injecting molten plastic into a mold, where it cools and solidifies into the final product. This article will walk you through the principles and steps of the plastic injection molding process, helping you understand it in just five minutes!

Is This Your First Time Hearing About "Plastic Injection Molding"? Curious About the Manufacturing Process?

Many everyday items are made from plastic, from the bottles you use to the caps on pens, and even cosmetic containers. The most common way to produce these plastic items is through plastic injection molding, a process that holds significant commercial value due to its versatility. If you’re curious about what "plastic injection" actually means, let Ming-Li guide you through the details.

What is Plastic Injection Molding? What is the Principle Behind It?

Plastic injection molding is the manufacturing technology used to create plastic products. This process involves heating plastic raw materials in an injection molding machine until they melt, then injecting the molten plastic into a mold. After cooling and solidification, the plastic product is removed from the mold. This is how many of the plastic items you see in the market are produced.

Looking to Start Your Own Business or Find an OEM Partner for Plastic Injection Molding?

With 40 years of experience in plastic injection molding, Ming-Li is here to share the 9 essential steps of the injection molding process, helping you get familiar with the workflow and communicate effectively with manufacturers.

What Are the Steps of the Plastic Injection Molding Process? 9 Steps Explained in One Go!

  1. Material Preparation: Plastic injection molding factories will select materials and mix them according to your needs, using a material blender to ensure an even mixture.

  2. Material Drying: Different plastic materials require specific temperatures and drying times before processing. Improper handling can lead to issues like incomplete filling or bubbles during molding.

  3. Material Feeding into the Molding Machine: Traditionally, material is manually fed into the molding machine. At Ming-Li, we use a central feeding system to transport the material from the drying unit to the molding machine within a cleanroom, minimizing contamination.

  4. Injection into the Mold: Based on the product volume and molding conditions, the material is injected into the mold to fill about 95% of the cavity.

  5. Holding Pressure: Holding pressure is applied to prevent the material from flowing back, ensuring complete filling and the integrity of the final product.

  6. Cooling: The plastic must cool down and solidify within the mold before being removed. Cooling systems like mold temperature controllers or water chillers are often used.

  7. Mold Opening: The mold is opened, and the product is separated from the sprue, ensuring that the mold operates correctly to avoid product damage.

  8. Ejection: The plastic product is ejected from the mold using a mechanism designed for this purpose. Ejector pins may leave small marks on the product, which can be observed on larger items.

  9. Product Handling: Robots or automated systems are often used to remove the product and sprue from the mold, ensuring consistent quality and reducing cycle time.

These are the 9 essential steps of the plastic injection molding process. Even with modern advancements, high-quality production relies on attention to detail in temperature, pressure, speed, and parameter settings.
